Dyslexia and Literacy
Assessments
in
Bath, Bristol & Surrounding Areas
Ages: 7 - 12 years
By discovering and understanding your child's strengths and reasons behind why they struggle with reading, spelling and writing, will help give your child the best
opportunity to reach their full potential.
Each child is unique. Discovering your child's learning profile is key to understanding them as an individual and unlocking their potential.
A Dyslexia and Literacy assessment both consist of tests that measure underlying ability, cognitive skills as well as attainment. This comprehensive approach allows exploration of all the aspects of learning, enabling the identification of the reasons behind why a child may struggle.
Early identification and intervention is key. Research shows that the
best chance for a child with Dyslexia to improve their reading and writing is to receive targeted intervention as early as possible. The age that a child receives intervention affects how quickly they catch up. Getting help early is also important for a child's self-esteem. From the assessment, recommendations will be given to develop your child's skills and confidence.
If a specific learning difficulty is identified, sometimes but not always, it may be possible for your child to receive exam concessions, for example: extra time, a scribe or reader. A report will suggest whether a child would potentially qualify for these arrangements, thus aiding the school's decision in this matter.
Hello, my name is Anna. I live in Bath and I have been teaching children for over 25 years. I specialise in completing detailed assessments for Specific Learning Difficulties including Dyslexia for children that struggle with reading, spelling and writing.
In 1993, I qualified with a Bachelor of Education degree from Cambridge University and I have enjoyed working in both the state and independent sectors, in the UK and Hong Kong. I have always found supporting children who struggle with literacy and numeracy the most rewarding element of my job. My primary goal as an assessor and teacher is to help a child or young person to develop confidence and the skills needed to enjoy learning and to reach their potential.
In 2015, I took an MA in Specific Learning Difficulties, this included modules specialising in Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, at Bath Spa University. I also gained my AMBDA (Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association) and Assessing Practising Certificate with Patoss (Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties) together with completing a Post-Graduate Certificate for Vulnerable Learners and Inclusions. Whilst keeping abreast of current practices concerning Specific Learning Difficulties, I also regularly attend courses covering a range of areas from Sensory Processing Issues to ADHD.
For the last eight years, I have enjoyed working as a SENCo, assessor and specialist teacher in a Bath school alongside completing assessments and teaching from home.
I believe that identifying a child's strengths and being able to recommend strategies to help each individual to overcome their difficulties is immensely valuable. And by selecting only the most rigorous and up to date assessments available, I am confident that my practice is of the highest level.
To see a child grow in confidence, enjoy their learning and achieve their goals is a privilege.
I have an active DBS which enables me to work with young people and children.
Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty. The key marker of dyslexia is difficulties in reading and spelling fluency (The Delphi Definition of Dyslexia, 2024)
A diagnostic Dyslexia assessment is appropriate for those in Year 3 and above.
The assessement starts with gathering detailed background information from school and home so I can learn as much as possible about your child prior to the assessment.
Following this, I will then meet with your child and once I feel they are happy and relaxed, we will complete the full range of assessment activities together. These will cover underlying ability, cognitive skills and attainment focusing on reading, writing and spelling. They will take around three hours plus breaks and can take place in the child's school or home.
A detailed report is then written. This report will explain your child's strengths and weaknesses alongside personalised recommendations and strategies that can be implemented at home and school.
After you receive the report, I will also arrange a follow up zoom meeting to discuss the findings & answer questions.
The cost of a full diagnostic assessment for Dyslexia is £495.
A Literacy & Learning assessment is primarily, but not exclusively, for those children in Key Stage One who are struggling with reading and writing but are too young for a formal dyslexia assessment.
The assessment gives a detailed analysis of reading, writing and spelling as well as looking at a child’s underlying ability and cognitive skills. Many of the same tests will be completed as in a full dyslexia report but instead of a diagnosis being made, they are used to enable the identification of areas of strength as well as any areas of vulnerability. The findings will also indicate whether there are any traits of dyslexia in the child's profile or other specific learning difficulties.
After the assessment, a report is written so there is a clear understanding of the child's strengths and difficulties. The report is shorter than a dyslexia report but includes a detailed analysis of the findings. It also contains extensive recommendations to inform future teaching and learning.
The cost of a Literacy & Learning assessment is £395.
I also offer diagnostic assessments for Specific Learning Difficulties including Dyslexia to schools in Bath, Bristol and the surrounding areas. This includes special packages for those children that qualify for pupil premiums.
I believe all children should be able to access an assessment if needed, no matter what their circumstances. The benefit of identifying strengths and weaknesses in a child's profile means: the child, parent/s and teachers all have a clear understanding of how they learn; interventions can be targeted; and additional support given, so each individual has the best possible chance to fulfil their potential.
These can only be booked directly by schools. If interested, please contact me for further details.
“Anna's friendly approach immediately put my daughter at ease. She loved the assessment process!”
"Thank you for all the time you spent with my son.
We were really impressed with how well you had the measure of him and how accurately you captured his strengths and weaknesses."
“Anna's reports are a joy to read. They are comprehensive, clear and the recommendations relevant to each child and easy to implement .”
Thank you for contacting me regarding an assessment. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
